Ladies and gentlemen,
I am filled with awe but at the same time I’m grateful and honoured to be allowed to address you briefly on this special but sad occasion.
Was it bitter cynicism that made the terrorists choose the number 911 as the date for their fateful, cowardly and shameless attack? The same number that, whenever and wherever dialled in the U.S., brings help and relief to those in dire circumstances; the number everyone knows by heart because it’s the national distress and emergency number.
For a firefighter like me the 9/11 tragedy brings extra grim and painful thoughts.
After all, weren’t the firefighters, more than any other category of people that helped fight the disaster and rescue as many men and women as was humanly possible, weren’t the firefighters the ones who suffered by far the most casualties due to their heroic and often successful attempts at saving others?
They rightly go down in history as the heroes of Ground Zero; not because of macho or dare-devil conduct, but because of their discipline, their training and their well planned and executed actions.
I speak for all the citizens of your sister city when I salute those brave colleagues and all other vitims, of this 911 attack to mankind and our free and democratic western world , in the special moments during this occasion
